Even though our booties can be prone to roughness, dryness and pimples, our butts often don’t get the same priority treatment as, say, our faces. For those who suffer from buttock acne or keratosis pilaris (those tiny inflamed bumps that are very common, but can still be bothersome), using a buttock scrub can help smooth things out. If you really want to keep your behind as smooth, hydrated, and blemish-free as possible, exfoliating every now and then with a butt scrub can do wonders to cleanse your skin and give you a softer butt.
The benefits of butt exfoliation
For those unfamiliar or in need of a little freshening up, exfoliation refers to the process of removing dead cells from the surface of the skin. It can increase skin’s radiance, even out texture and unclog pores, according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, MD. Plus, it helps promote cell turnover so that younger, healthier looking skin sits on the surface.
The two types of exfoliants to choose from, for all surfaces
For your information, there are two types of exfoliators that you can use in your skin care routine: chemical and manual. Chemical exfoliants (aka, peels and toners) work by breaking the bonds that hold cells together and manual exfoliants (these usually come in the form of a scrub that you apply and massage into the skin) use friction to remove dead skin. When choosing a butt scrub, it’s best to choose products that are gentle and contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which are known for their ability to break down dead skin without damaging the skin.
“When looking for a back exfoliator, I recommend looking for a product that contains glycolic or lactic acid, which helps gently exfoliate without irritation,” according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD. She later added that sticking with chemical exfoliants and products containing urea (a type of humectant), are often better used on the buttocks than physical exfoliants because they are less likely to irritate the skin.
Whether you want a smooth bottom or a pimple-free derriere, here are some of the best scrubs and solutions to help your butt look (and feel) its best.
The best scrubs and solutions for your butt
DERMAdoctor KP Duty Dermatologist Formulated Body Scrub – $50.00
This DERMAdoctor KP Duty Body Scrub is no joke when it comes to giving your butt a smooth new surface. It uses both chemical and manual exfoliation to help eliminate buttocks and bumps, thanks to keratosis pilaris. The formula contains glycolic acid and lactic acid, plus several different herbal extracts to really amp up the exfoliation. But just FYI: the scrub shouldn’t be used on super sensitive skin. Just take a small amount, rub it in, rinse and you’re good to go.
Peach and Lily KP Bump Boss Microderm Body Scrub — $28.00
If an ingrown hair on your butt has been killing your vibe, this Peach and Lily Peach and Lily KP Bump Boss Microderm Body Scrub is here to help. Glycolic and lactic acids inside help break down layers of dead skin around hair follicles, while mineral crystals gently buff and polish your derriere. And thanks to skin-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid (a moisturizer) and squalane (a type of compound that attracts moisture and water), the skin on your bottom will stay smooth and hydrated.
True Botanicals Body Love Butt Scrub — $42.00
Unlike other manual exfoliators that can sometimes irritate the skin and cause micro tears, this True Botanicals Body Love Bum Scrub is very gentle. Mainly because it uses black willow bark, a natural, physical exfoliator that helps calm skin and target redness. Additionally, the scrub uses coconut shells, bamboo powder, and jojoba beads to help smooth the surface of your buttocks.
Skinfix Resurface+ Regenerating Body Scrub with Glycolic and Lactic Acid — $32.00
If the skin on your back is looking a little dull and uneven from past breakouts, consider this Skinfix Resurface+ Replenishing Glycolic & Lactic Acid Body Scrub as a way to give it the glow it needs. The creamy formula contains 13% glycolic and lactic acid and a little willow bark extract to help unclog your pores and prevent future blemishes. It’s also a body scrub, so you can also use it on other areas that are prone to bumps and unevenness, like your chest and legs. Just be sure to apply it to dry skin and rinse off when done.
Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum Body Scrub — $10.00
Just like the brand’s famous Bum Bum Cream, the Bum Bum Body Scrub smells like tropical paradise and gives you baby-soft buttocks. However, we love it a lot for its exfoliating powers. The scrub uses a unique blend of cupuaçu seeds, sugar crystals and guaraná (a plant extract with antimicrobial properties) to help smooth and polish your back. Together, these ingredients act as a natural exfoliator to slough off dead skin. In addition, your cheeks will be hydrated thanks to the emollient properties of coconut oil.
Dermalogica Thermafoliant Body Scrub — $44.00
For those looking to smooth their skin all over their body, this formula from Dermologica may be for you. Its key ingredients include lactic acid, malic acid, as well as a little olive oil to give your butt a radiant glow. In addition, it helps protect your skin against radical damage thanks to the presence of different antioxidants. Apply it to damp skin two to three times a week.
Anese That Booty Tho Walnut Shell Booty Scrub – $29.00
This scrub is a huge fan favorite, with over 3,000 people singing its praises. Much of the hype has to do with its natural ingredients and its ability to help tighten and hydrate your booty skin. Its formula includes a combination of moisturizing shea butter, aloe vera and crushed walnut.
Dove Exfoliating Body Scrub — $6.00
While we know it’s not exactly a scrub (it’s more of a “polish”), it can be used as such. Inside it contains tiny exfoliating particles to help transform your skin from rough and dry to silky smooth. The formula is also made with moisturizer, so your butt gets A+ hydration while you exfoliate.
Bliss Clear Genius Clarifying Cleansing Gel — $13.00
A personal favorite of Dr. Zeichner is this Bliss Clear Genius Clarifying Gel Cleanser. Although not a scrub, it does contain salicylic acid (a type of beta-hydroxy acid that helps unclog pores and promotes exfoliation) and bark extract willow to help remove dirt from your skin. Use it alone or pair it with a scrub when you shower – you’ll have silky smooth booty in days.
