Acne, wrinkles and beauty myths

Let’s face it, with so many brands, choices, and ingredients all promising similar results, going to the drugstore to find the right skin care products can be overwhelming.

We tackled three main issues in the beauty world: acne, wrinkles, and beauty myths.

Starting with acne, Bold City dermatologist Dr. Sarah Ferrer-Bruker recommends that when visiting the drugstore, it’s not so much about choosing a certain brand as it is choosing the right ingredients.

“Benzoyl peroxide is like a topical antibiotic that we have used in dermatology for a long time. It kills bacteria and transforms your skin cells faster, ”said Ferrer Bruker.

This is exactly what you want for acne treatment.

Some brands sell creams that contain 10% benzoyl peroxide, but in this case, more doesn’t necessarily mean better.

“Sometimes when you buy a higher percentage it can be very drying and itchy you are walking around in a big flaky mess. I would recommend 5% benzoyl peroxide or less and if you tend to be scaly, I would recommend trying it with a moisturizer, ”said Ferrer Bruker.

If you plan to use an acne cleanser, Ferrer Bruker said not to rinse it off just yet.

“You’re going to want to let it sit for a bit before washing it, and then put on a medicated cream afterwards,” Ferrer Bruker said.

The two drugstore products Ferrer-Bruker likes:

Ferrer-Bruker said you can use both a cleanser and a cream.

Just try to keep the main ingredient in either product around that 5% mark.

If acne persists, becomes red and inflamed, or acne scars, this is when Ferrer-Bruker recommends seeing a professional.

It’s a lot to ask a working mom or busy dad to have a nine-step skin care routine to repair wrinkles.

Ferrer-Bruker said reduce the number of products you need, focus on buying the right products.

Ferrer-Bruker said that wearing sunscreen and sun protective clothing is the best way to prevent wrinkles, and the best sunscreen is the one you’re going to wear. Every day, without exception.

But if the damage is already done, Ferrer-Bruker has offered these four products:

  • A retinal, there are no specific percentages on the labels until you talk about prescription quality. Therefore, find a brand you like.
  • Hyaluronic acid

As for the cleaner, Ferrer-Bruker said that’s where she personally spends the least money. She said as long as it didn’t break your skin or leave you clean then it was a good choice.

“It’s a marathon. Nothing happens overnight, and the earlier you start the better, and if you protect your skin from sun damage, that’s the icing on the cake, ”said Ferrer-Bruker.

If you don’t see the results you want after a few months, Ferrer-Bruker said maybe now is the time to start thinking about seeing a professional for a prescription-grade retinol, which is a retinoid.

Putting toothpaste on a pimple overnight will make it go away.

NOT TRUE

“There is absolutely nothing to show that toothpaste on a pimple will speed up your recovery or the trajectory of the pimple, all kinds of natural treatments will lead to more irritants than anything,” Ferrer-Bruker said.

Taking biotin supplements speeds up the growth of your nails or hair or makes your skin brighter

NOT TRUE

“No, actually biotin there is pretty weak evidence,” Ferrer-Bruker said. “Usually people mistake it for hair and nails, it’s super popular, the evidence just isn’t good.”
