Aimé Leon Dore’s new London store is all about warmth and woodwork

Aimé Leon Dore’s new boutique in London’s Soho has a distinguished presence. Its exterior is marked with a fir green scalloped canopy, with the brand name positioned at the top in small gold print. Two mannequins wearing Teddy Santis’ menswear designs are positioned in the display case, along with an organized collection of objects such as a basketball and a ballot box. Behind that? Well, that’s unknown. Much like at the brand’s Nolita store, the boutique mysteriously screens its interior offerings from the street with a pair of velvet curtains hung behind the windows and door.

But inside, a rich and brooding world awaits.

The space, designed by Sarita Posada Interiors in collaboration with West Architecture, features layered antique Persian rugs and swirling Cipollino marble floors. Yellow curled chairs sit in front of walnut panels. Achille Castiglioni’s “Light Ball” lamps, an iconic piece of mid-century design, hang from the ceilings.

Posada says she and Santis found inspiration in heritage menswear boutiques, as well as the work of Austrian architect Adolf Loos (a pioneer of Viennese modernism). Dark walnut wood finishes are a nod to classic Saville Row couture boutiques, while velvet wall panels and leather banquettes are reminiscent of London’s private clubs. Ornate rugs and green accents are a tribute to the famous men’s outfitter, Knize, which was designed by Loos in 1921. Most of the decorative items come from local London dealers.

“It was important for us to reference the two traditional settings such as Loos’s Knize,” Posada explains, “but to balance it with a number of additional pieces found mid-century that are consistent with the brand’s voice.”
