Gordon County Deputy Sheriffs were sent to the local hospital this week in response to a report of a toddler seriously injured in suspicious circumstances.
The 2-year-old was then airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. The investigation quickly focused on a married couple who were babysitting the child.
A number of witnesses were interviewed and physical evidence was gathered during the execution of a search warrant in the apartment where detectives believe the crimes were committed.
Detectives then uncovered surveillance footage from a local business that corroborated the initial evidence.
Babysitters who were arrested, and who were acquaintances of the child’s family, are identified as Anthony owenby, 27, from 1386 US Highway 41, Apartment B4, Calhoun, GA and his wife Jacalyn Deanna Owenby, 24 years old, from the same address. Anthony owenby was charged with aggravated assault and battery, aggravated assault and cruelty to children (1st degree). Jacalyn Owenby was charged with child cruelty (1st degree) and misrepresentation. Investigators have reason to believe that drugs played a role in this incident. The two accused are imprisoned pending legal proceedings.
The child would now be in stable condition.
