The internet is full of information about isotretinoin (the oral acne medication formerly known as Accutane). Used to treat severe and stubborn acne, the drug is widely prescribed by dermatologists for its noticeable and sometimes permanent results. New York dermatologist Shari Marchbein, MD, explains that clinical trials with isotretinoin suggest that it may “effectively reduce acne and lead to scar reduction.”
Although Dr. Marchbein is not the only one who views the drug as a “real wonder drug”, isotretinoin users generally experience multiple side effects, including fatigue, muscle stiffness and sensitivity to the sun. Some TikTok users even claim that it narrowed their noses (although dermatologists disagree). However, perhaps the most common and notorious side effect agreed by users and doctors is extreme dryness of the lips that begins just a week after starting treatment. “By far the most common symptoms are dry lips and skin, which are seen in almost all patients and expected,” notes dermatologist Chloe Goldman, MD, who is a Miami-based former Accutane user. “Isotretinoin is unique among retinoids in that it decreases the production of sebum, which contributes to these symptoms.”
After battling acne since college, my dermatologist recommended a six month treatment with isotretinoin. With my bathroom drawers completely filled with my favorite lip balm, I was confident that I could withstand the inevitable dryness, but I quickly found that my old go-to product was doing nothing to stop the peeling and peeling. epic cracking that would quickly transform my lips. Fortunately, after a few frantic emails, my dermatologist recommended CeraVe Healing Ointment ($ 18; amazon.com).
It’s an understatement to say that this hydrating skin protector saved my lips. After a few days of use, the cracks that formed on my lips closed again and the peeling stopped completely thanks to the combination of petroleum jelly and mineral oil in the formula. Even if you have sensitive skin, you can apply this ointment without fear. “[Petroleum Jelly] never causes contact dermatitis (an allergic skin reaction) or irritation. Plus, you can apply it to any dry crack, whether it’s the lips or the feet, ”says Dr. Goldman.
Dr. Marchbein notes that CeraVe healing ointment is one of his favorite recommendations for preventing severe and painful cracks. “It is essential to apply ointments during the day and especially before bed (when we lose the most heat and moisture from our skin during the night),” she explains.
And these dermatologists and I are not the only ones who love this product for treating dry lips. The ointment has received over 5,600 five-star reviews from Amazon buyers who claim it soothes, hydrates, and heals dry, cracked skin all over the body. One customer wrote: “I admit being skeptical at first. After all, isn’t it just petroleum jelly with a few extras mixed in? In application, it’s so much better! It’s non-greasy, soothing, and makes all of your dry areas of the skin feel soothed and smooth. “
Plus, critics with sensitivities and skin conditions, including eczema, call it “the best moisturizer,” and those with acne have said it heals their breakouts almost overnight. Another user said he uses it to combat the dryness caused by the retinol used to treat his acne. “After being prescribed Retin A for my acne, my skin became incredibly dry and scaly. I was recommended this product and I was not disappointed! I apply it over my usual lotion at night and it makes such a difference. No more flakes, no more painful red spots, no more tightness. “Whether you are an isotretinoin user or just want complete protection for your lips and skin this winter, there is no is no problem with this lip pomade.
