Direct-to-consumer health company Nurx seeks to fight rosacea

The women’s direct-to-consumer healthcare platform Nurx has expanded its home dermatology services to include treatment for rosacea.

Nurx launched the first of its dermatological treatment services earlier this year for acne, and thanks to this, a significant portion of patients mistook their rosacea for acne when seeking treatment, said the company in its advertisement.

“We know that many of our current patients suffer from rosacea and that many people with rosacea have not received a proper diagnosis or treatment and may not have access to specialist care,” said Dr Jennifer Peña, Nurx’s chief medical officer, in a statement. .

“The combination of the clinical acumen of our team of providers and the Nurx telehealth platform will allow us to make high quality medical care widely available to those in need. “

To receive rosacea treatment through Nurx, patients share their health history through the platform and upload photos of their skin. From there, an approved Nurx medical provider reviews the patient’s information, provides a diagnosis, and develops a treatment plan that includes oral or topical medication. The prescription will then be filled and mailed directly to the patient’s door.

Nurx also offers topical anti-aging retinoid creams and plans to expand its acne treatments to teens later this summer.


Rosacea is a chronic but treatable disease that affects 16 million Americans, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It is more common in women and in people with fair skin.

The disease usually manifests on the skin of the face and is linked to depression, anxiety and social isolation, according to Clinical, aesthetic and experimental dermatology. In fact, the AAD estimates that the lost productivity in patients and caregivers due to rosacea was $ 78 million in 2013.

“Skin issues can negatively impact self-esteem and mental health, and there’s no reason a patient should have to seek a referral from a primary care physician or drive for hours. to see a dermatologist to receive this important care, ”Varsha Rao, CEO of Nurx, said in a statement.


Nurx began offering prescriptions for birth control and PrEP through telehealth. Since then, it has grown to include home testing for STIs and COVID-19, as well as treatments for migraines.

The company completed a Series C funding round last summer that brought its total funding to $ 113 million.

Competitors who also offer mail-order prescription health services include Hims & Hers, which recently went public through a PSPC merger with Oaktree Acquisition. There is also Ro, which has strengthened its women’s health offering with its recent acquisition of Modern Fertility.
