Does curology work for acne?

We are living in the golden age of personalization. We personalize our salads on each trip to Sweetgreen to make sure they have everything we want and nothing we don’t; we customize our Spotify recommendations to meet our musical tastes; and we customize our multivitamins to meet our individual needs; so it seems natural that we also personalize our skin care. One of the biggest beauty trends to emerge in recent years, personalized skincare offers users the ability to address their specific skin concerns with specially chosen ingredients. A brand at the forefront of this trend is Curology.

What is curology?

Curology is a direct-to-consumer skin care company founded by dermatologists and founded on the belief that the most effective skincare is personal. “That’s why we’re working one-on-one with subscribers to create a personalized prescription formula designed to help solve acne and anti-aging skin issues,” says Nicole Hangsterfer, the medical assistant for the brand’s marketing content. “Curology makes powerful prescription skin care more affordable online.”

How does curology work?

The process in many ways mimics a traditional visit to the dermatologist by offering a one-on-one virtual consultation to clients. All you need to do is upload a few photos of your skin and take a quick quiz about your skin concerns, practices and goals.

Dermatology provider Curology then creates a personalized formula, consisting of up to three active ingredients (a combination of tretinoin, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, clindamycin, niacinamide, zinc pyrithione or metronidazole). “All of these ingredients are regularly prescribed by dermatologists and used in skin care products, and they can be incredibly effective in treating acne, scars, and signs of aging,” says Adam Luber, MD, certified dermatologist in Scottsdale, Arizona. “The obvious advantage of using a custom formula is that you can get them from one source rather than having to use several different products.”

Once your personalized cream is created, it is shipped directly to your door. You may need to work up to daily use, as most of the ingredients used can be quite harsh on the skin, but the cream should last for about two months. During this time, your curology provider will check to make sure your formula is right for your skin’s needs and can adapt as your skin care goals change over time.

How much does curology cost?

The cost of curology depends on what you want. The service costs $ 19.95 per month for the Small Custom Formula or $ 39.90 every two months for the Large Custom Formula, and you can choose other products, such as a cleanser or moisturizer, a la carte for an additional cost. Your first month of Curology, however, is completely free with the brand’s trial offer (just pay the $ 4.95 shipping fee). Unlike some prescription skincare products, Curology does not accept insurance.

Does curology make your skin worse before it improves?

While it might seem counterintuitive, you might notice that your skin breaks out more when you start your custom formula, but that actually means it works. “This is commonly referred to as a ‘purge’,” says Hangsterfer. “The purge occurs when certain prescription acne treatments unclog the pores and bring things to the surface. Basically, ingredients like tretinoin can cause rashes because of the way they target clogged pores and increase skin cell turnover. “This purging period typically lasts six to eight weeks, but if you experience any ongoing or significant rashes, be sure to check with your curology provider so they can advise you.

Does curology have side effects?

Like most skincare products with active ingredients, Curology has potential side effects, especially at the start. During the first few weeks of using the acne medication, it is normal to experience temporary dryness, increased rash, peeling, redness, mild itching, or tingling. It’s hard to know how your skin will react to the new treatment, so it’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and start slowly if necessary.

How long does it take Curology to start working?

The results really depend on your skin and its reaction. “When it comes to acne, it usually takes several months to see the full benefit of treatment,” says Hangsterfer. “When it comes to anti aging concerns, we’ve seen everything from subtle changes after a year to dramatic changes within a few weeks.” And while everyone’s skin is unique and will work on their own schedule, it’s important to be realistic in your expectations and stay patient throughout your journey with Curology or any other prescription topical.

Does curology work for acne?

Because the custom formula can contain several different ingredients in varying concentrations, your cream will truly address your individual acne problems, whether mild or cystic. The ingredients used in curology formulas are proven and dermatologist approved, and they are known to deliver great results, but at the same time, every person’s skin and acne are different, and you might very well have need something beyond a topic. “Nothing beats an in-person assessment by a dermatologist,” says Dr. Luber. “It is important to assess the skin closely and monitor its progress in order to provide the most accurate recommendations.”
