Does diet cause acne? The best dermatologists weigh

We’ve always been told that if you eat chips or chocolate in the evening, you wake up with a pimple in the morning. But is there really a correlation between diet and acne? I contacted the three largest dermatologists in the country to find out!

“Yes, there is a correlation between acne and diet! »Exclaims the dermatologist Dr Amy Spizuoco. “You see, acne is an inflammatory skin condition. So, all foods that are inflammatory should be avoided. So, foods high in refined or added sugars such as fructose and glucose should be avoided. Acne patients avoid products containing gluten like other processed ingredients in foods containing gluten which add to inflammation. And lastly, dairy products can worsen inflammation and make acne worse. , eat wisely!

“Diet can absolutely play an important role in the development of acne”, explains the dermatologist Dr Angie Koriakos. “Studies show that consuming dairy products can lead to worsening acne, including consuming large amounts of dairy-based whey protein supplements. If you’re taking a protein supplement, I generally recommend a plant-based vegan protein like Orgain. If you’re looking to start eating something to relieve your acne, some studies show that omega 3 intake can be beneficial too!

“Diet plays a role in acne, but not in the old-fashioned way that you may have been told in the past … it’s a bit more complex than ‘fatty foods’, says dermatologist.
