Here’s how to properly use niacinamide and its benefits for the skin

A good skincare regimen is all about choosing the right ingredients for your skin and following them religiously. In the midst of cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin, you can add certain other components to accentuate the natural beauty of your skin. One of those ingredients that most people swear by these days is niacinamide. It has become a staple in our skincare vanity and can work wonders if applied persistently to the skin. This nutrient is a boon to the skin and is used to treat a variety of skin issues.

Health Shots reached out to skin and wellness specialist Dr. Kiran Sethi to understand the importance of niacinamide in daily skincare.

What is niacinamide?

“Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it’s a wonderful topical B-complex vitamin. First, and most importantly, it reduces oil secretion in most people with oily skin. So when used in amounts of about 5% at the right pH of about 5-6, it can reduce the amount of oil our skin secretes.Furthermore, it can help reduce the size of your pores. In total, this leads to smaller pores with less oil,” says Dr. Sethi.

Plus, she adds, “Another thing that niacinamide is really helpful with is that it can help reduce pigmentation, and it can also reduce issues like inflammation that often cause skin pigmentation. So not only does this treat the cause, but it can also help reduce any underlying issues that appear.

How can niacinamide be used daily?

This ingredient can be used once or twice a day as it is perfectly safe and gentle, and it does not irritate the skin if formulated correctly, according to the expert. If it is found in face washes or cleansers, it is not proven to be as effective. Therefore, she suggests using it more in leave-on applications rather than serums for effective results.

Recently, dermatologist Dr. Rashmi Shetty shared a reel on her social media explaining how this ingredient can be combined with other skincare ingredients.

Day routine:

She prefers to keep it simple during the day and minimize layering. Therefore, if someone wants to use niacinamide during the day, following the layering order gives optimal results.

Niacinamide > Moisturizer > SPF

Night routine:

At night, depending on your concerns, here are some good niacinamide combinations:

  • For dull skin: Niacinamide + Vitamin C
  • For hydration: Niacinamide + Hyaluronic Acid
  • For anti-aging: Niacinamide + Retinol
  • For anyone with pigmentation issues: Niacinamide + Daytime Moisturizer
  • Niacinamide + Vitamin C at dusk
  • Niacinamide + Retinol at night
  • Niacinamide with other products

It can be found in your moisturizer and sunscreen as long as it is in the right percentage of 3-5%. It can also be used with retinol to treat scars and acne marks. It will always deliver the results when formulated correctly. Persistent use will result in reduced oil secretion and pore size with brighter skin. It will always lead to fruitful results when paired with the right skincare product.

Individual Niacinamide Benefits

Some of the benefits of niacinamide include:

1. Boost immunity

Niacinamide holds keratin, a type of protein, in the skin to keep it firm and healthy.

2. Reduces redness and blotches

Niacinamide helps reduce inflammation that can be caused by eczema, acne, or other inflammatory conditions.

3. Regulates sebum secretion

It’s not just dry-skinned beauties who benefit from retaining moisture in the skin, but also this wonderful ingredient that regulates the amount of oil produced by our sebaceous glands and prevents them from overflowing.

4. Protect against oxidative stress

It helps maintain skin cells while protecting it from environmental issues such as sunlight, toxins and pollution.
