JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith faces a backlash on social media after voting against certification of the Electoral College vote in the 2020 presidential election.
Hyde-Smith has joined 5 Senate Republicans Wednesday to oppose the Arizona electoral vote count and 6 Senate Republicans to oppose the Pennsylvania electoral vote count.
Arizona and Pennsylvania were two states President Trump lost and then questioned in the days following the 2020 presidential election, alleging massive voter fraud in both cases.
The reaction to the senator’s votes was immediate.
“Well, the number is 6. The seditious six. Out of 100 senators, only 6 were on the crowd side, ”former Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wrote on Twitter. “Hawley, Cruz, Marshall, Hyde-Smith and a former Auburn football coach.”
The “former Auburn football coach” she refers to is Senator Tommy Tuberville, who was the football manager at Auburn University as well as the University of Mississippi. He is also the newly elected senator from Alabama.
McCaskill, who is an NBC and MSNBC News contributor, would follow his tweet, writing, “Oh shit. How could I leave out that ‘campaign lawyer’ Kennedy. So tired I can’t count.
Ali Velshi, host of MSNBC VelshiThe Mississippi senator also hit on Twitter, writing: “On the issue of opposing AZ’s vote count, the following six U.S. senators and elected senators have supported Trump’s coup attempt. .. ”
After listing all six Senators, including Hyde-Smith, Velshi ended the tweet by ominously stating, “Remember them.”
The Lincoln Project, a political action committee formed by former Republicans to attack President Trump, also shone the spotlight on Senator Hyde-Smith and the five other Republicans opposed to the Arizona election results, using the hashtag #SeditiousSix and #RememberTheirNames.
Hyde-Smith also had his supporters. After posting his statement opposing the election results on Facebook, one person commented, “I’m shocked and amazed !!! I really didn’t think you had it inside you Cindy! THANK YOU for defending my vote, our votes and the integrity of the elections !!! “
Another commented that they were ‘so happy [Hyde-Smith] stood up for everyone, regardless of party, who wants fair elections now and in the future. “
The pro-Trump Twitter account The faithful American used the words “Remember their names !!” In a positive way, using a photo of the six senators who voted against Arizona’s electoral vote with the caption “The only 6 defending #PresidentTrump”.
Senator Roger Wicker did not oppose to certify the 2020 presidential election, writing in a statement that “it’s time to recognize” Trump’s defeat.
The 3 congressmen of the Mississippi GOP, however, voted Wednesday to challenge the 2020 presidential election results, siding with 121 House Republicans in rejecting Arizona’s 11 electoral votes. Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson was the only U.S. representative from Mississippi to vote to certify the presidential election results.
Hyde-Smith is also embroiled in another scandal involving the United States Capitol Police.
Police are currently taking the heat for their handling of a riot at the Capitol Wednesday afternoon, which left 4 dead and many officers injured. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi search now the resignation of Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund.
Sund defended his police response at the capture of the Capitol, claiming that its officers “acted with courage in the face of thousands of individuals implicated in violent riots”.
As the current chairman of the Senate legislative appropriations subcommittee, Hyde-Smith has jurisdiction over the United States Capitol Police. She has since released a statement regarding the situation, claiming she is “on watch.[ing] the security situation at the Capitol up close.
Hyde-Smith also said the Capitol Hill committee and police were reviewing the events that happened and finding ways to avoid a repeat.
