MM6 Maison Margiela Collection Resort 2023

Life doesn’t always fit perfectly together, but MM6’s new bags do. Called the Three 6s, the collection consists of three bags that fit together like puzzle pieces. They are placed on a shelf like a sculpture and separate to become pretty bags with abstract shapes. The trio of bags is a good metaphor for the way of working of MM6, an anonymous collective of designers finding ways to make the mundane magic that translates into an MM6 vision.

This season, the record is really about unity – of people and their closets. MM6 has long been doing high fashion and there are cream blazers and wide leg pants to love here. But as the collection grows, it includes new categories. Sweatshirts and put-together t-shirts, which aren’t really staples in the MM6 world, have established themselves in a loose casual style. Button-down shirts, jeans and denim jackets were given the MM6 twist by cutting straight across the shoulders and creating a two-dimensional flat shape that ties straight from front to back. Driven by the body, the silhouette sits at the neck, almost like a Cristobal Balenciaga couture shape, and rises a bit around the midsection. Quirky, but not unflattering. Anchored by chunky shoes and punctuated by the occasional stretch bandeau top or bike shorts, the look is all about a game of proportion.

The collection’s lookbook reinforces the idea that this is a wardrobe for play. Photographed outside a French nightclub, models in sturdy mules pose like disinterested revelers waiting for permission to enter. They look carefree and cool in silver jeans, a circular poncho printed with a photograph of a Parisian street reflected in an MM6 metal earring and bias lace tops inspired by pillowcases. These are basic clothes for non-basic weather.
