You work hard, so your under-eye concealer should too! With brightening and blurring formulas to conceal imperfections in delicate skin, the right products can take you from tired to energized in just a few clicks.

Our testers applied over 20 concealers (using their application method of choice) looking for the ones with the best hiding abilities and the most staying power. In an effort to put their best face forward, testers blended a few dots of concealer under their eyes, taking notes on each cream’s texture, feel and coverage right out of the bottle. Six hours later, they rechecked to see how long each concealer lasted and if there were any creases.

This trio of concealers is considered the best that PEOPLE Tested.

Best Overall: Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

Advantages: Tarte Shape Tape Concealer provides long-lasting coverage that barely feels there with a matte finish.

The inconvenients: It must be well mixed.

This Tarte concealer is a cult classic within the beauty community. Reviewers rave about the shine-free matte formula’s smooth finish and versatility when contouring. It scored a Flawless 5/5 for Texture, Feel, Coverage and Hold; our testers agreed that the concealer didn’t crease or clump after hours on the go. We also loved the product’s wide range of shades; Of all the ones we tested, this one had the most extensive shade range with 35 shades.

After applying the product with a jumbo-sized applicator brush, reviewers were impressed with how bright it looked under the eyes.

The only downside that testers noted? It definitely fits more into a “full makeup face” routine, rather than being a quick on-the-go product. “Definitely not an everyday formula if you just wear makeup and run out, but a go-to for all-around glam,” noted one tester.

Overall, Tarte Shape Tape Concealer wins top prize for its fierce, weightless, all-day-long full coverage.

Best Budget: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser

Advantages: The formula is buildable and can be used to highlight and shape.

The inconvenients: It only exists in 18 shades.

Marketed for its power to conceal dark circles and fine lines, the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser packs a mighty punch when it comes to flawless, glowing skin. Reviewers loved the affordable price, the fresh feel, and all they could do with the concealer stick.

“High coverage, good texture and hold. Love to highlight, conceal and shape with this,” one wrote. “The right shade works just as well as a base.”

Looking in the mirror again after the six-hour test, another reported “very minimal creases” – but better than expected after a full day of running.

One note: the product is packaged with a formula dispensed by a click-up sponge applicator – which can be a plus or a minus, depending on personal preference.

Best for Spot Coverage: Nars Soft Matte Full Concealer Jar

Advantages: The oil-free formula conceals acne, blemishes and blemishes in a snap.

The inconvenients: It’s expensive and can be tedious to apply.

If “creamy” sounds dreamy and you don’t have a beauty budget, this concealer is for you. Reviewers unanimously raved about its silky smooth feel and how the highly pigmented product concealed blemishes, sunspots and blemishes.

“It covers my single thin line like a charm and it’s great for acne coverage,” one tester said of the oil-free option.

While Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer Pot was rated 5/5 for all-day use, potential buyers should note the suggested makeup application. Sephora recommends that the product is first warmed in the fingers before being placed on the face, while Nars advise adding a stippling brush to blend it into wrinkles, scars or large pores.

Things to Consider Before Buying Under-Eye Concealer

Goal

With so many multitasking products on the market, take a step back and think about what your vanity counter is missing. Do you just need an under-eye concealer, or do you want to enhance the base of your routine with a formula that can layer, contour and highlight? Do you want to stay matte or do you prefer more shine? Read the fine print to make sure your concealer will create a look you love.

skin type

If you have particularly dry, oily, or sensitive skin, it’s important to consider how a formula can best meet your needs. Optimal coverage is different for everyone, and PEOPLE Tested’s recommended concealer head trio focused more specifically on the delicate and often drier under-eye area.

Shade range also comes into play in the pursuit of the most beautiful glow, which is just another reason we love Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, which comes in 35 colors.

Application

Here’s where we get technical: how do you apply your under-eye concealer? Are sponges and stippling brushes your friends, or are you more of a knock-and-pull type? Be honest about how much time you’re really going to invest in making sure your product works for your lifestyle.

How We Tested Under-Eye Correctors

Eight beauty testers sampled a total of 23 under-eye concealers for the PEOPLE tested. Testers applied three to four dots of each product under their eyes and blended into skin using their preferred application method, immediately assessing texture, feel, and level of coverage. The testers continued with their usual routines and checked the concealer again between five and six hours later. There they looked to see if the concealer creased and judged for the overall hold.

Who are the people tested?

We created the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval to help you find the best products for your life. We use our unique methodology to test products in three labs across the country and with our network of in-home testers to determine their effectiveness, durability, ease of use and more. Based on the results, we evaluate and recommend products so you can find the one that suits your needs.

But we don’t stop there: we also regularly review the categories in which we have awarded the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval, because today’s best product may not be tomorrow’s best. And besides, companies can never buy our recommendation: their products must deserve it, fair and square.

In short, PEOPLE Tested provides recommendations you can trust – every day, every purchase.
